Folks, my DAKAR being a UK spec counts miles, however on my upcoming travels I'll be a few months in the world of kilometres (maps, road signs, etc.) and wondered if any of you have come across a quick and easy way of getting the odometer to rather count kilometres than miles. If possible it would be nice to a) not have to spend too much money, and b) to somehow keep the odometer reading correct i.e. not to start once again at zero. Perhaps all this is too much of an ask....?

Hi Noel, does it have analogue or digital read-out? Digital speedos often can be switched by pressing the right buttons in a particular order.
What some other people do is fit a small bicycle-style speedometer with a pickup on the front wheel.
If it's an analogue (dial-type speedo), because it's electronic (not cable-driven) there may be some sort of black box you can fit.
Only other thing I can suggest is getting a KPH speedometer off a non-UK Dakar and swap it out for the duration of your trip.

Hiya Noel,
I had a quick look at Rich's Dakar on the weekend and don't see any easy way of changing it to km given that it's electronically triggered from the rear wheel.
Maybe have a quick look at the F650 web sites to see if they have any ideas.

http://www.f650.co.ukWaz's suggestion of a cycle computer is probably the quickest / simplest / cheapest solution - you could pick up a wireless cycle computer for around £20 on the internet.
Cheers

Thanks guys for your responses...
I was kinda hoping that there was some sort of undocumented toggle switch you folks knew of - will post again if I find anything else useful...
As an aside - apparently on the R1200 GS this can be changed over using some sort of software link.
